Womens day South Africa is a public holiday observed on the 9th of August, the anniversary of when an estimated 20 000 women marched on Pretoria’s Union Buildings in 1956. The march was organised in order to protest the Urban Areas Act put in place by the Apartheid government which required women of colour to carry pass books in order to enter and move around in ‘whites-only areas’.
These women came from places as far away as Port Elizabeth and Cape Town in order to protest. They sang protest songs and observers say that the march moved with great discipline, which is an impressive achievement.
They marched all the way up to then Prime Minister JG Strijdom’s office door even though he had refused to see them and stood there in total silence for a full half hour before leaving a petition that is said to have contained over 100 000 signatures at his door. They then sang Nkosi Sikelel before leaving in a calm and orderly fashion.
Today we celebrate national Women’s Day in order to honour the women who stood up for their rights against an oppressive and unjust system.
The march was a great success and to this day we honour the women who protested against unjust treatment and took strong steps to shape the country that we live in today. Truly they and all the other women who work tirelessly to create a better South Africa are deserving of Womens Day Gifts.
